Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery
Why is Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery a growing trend? A hysterectomy may be performed to treat several conditions including uterine disease, uterine fibroids, endometriosis and gynecologic cancers. Advances in technology and technique are providing women with alternatives to traditional open surgeries for the treatment of gynecologic concerns. Minimally-invasive surgery options offer improved precision to provide women with a better patient experience. Surgical robots were developed to enhance the skill of surgeons and to facilitate the performance of procedures that require extreme precision in delicate anatomic locations.By way of several tiny incisions, surgical instruments and 3D visual equipment access the surgical site with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. Surgeons are able to clearly view important anatomical structures, and with total control of the robotic arms, they perform the most
complex and delicate procedures with enhanced dexterity and unmatched precision.
According to the manufacturer, 205,000 da Vinci-assisted procedures were performed in 2009 (a 51% increase from 2008). This figure includes approximately 90,000 prostatectomy and 70,000 hysterectomy procedures. While prostatectomy accounted for the majority of cases, hysterectomy represented the fastest growing procedure based on percentage of growth (130% increase compared to previous year).
